Objective: To design a card deck with a cohesive system throughout the different varieties of cards.
Solution: We were allowed to choose our theme for this project, so I chose angels and demons. A selection of each type of card (face, number, ace and joker) and each suit (swords, staves, cups and disks) was designed, with the four above being a selection of those. In alignment with the mythologies of many religions, the male elements are associated with the dark and the female with the light. Thus, the suits were assigned based on the idea of the sword and staff as male icons and the cup and disk as female. To create the essence of the demon cards, aggressive, sharp symbols were used with red and black colors to reflect a dark, sinister nature. The artwork was left as a jagged sketch to capture the chaotic nature associated with demons. For the angel cards, smooth, fluid symbols were used with white and sky blue to create a light and airy contrast to the dark aggressive suits. The illustration was clearly inked to reflect the balanced nature associated with angels. (Illustration: Amanda Chaffee)
