Objective: To create a 12 month calendar featuring photography from the band The Start’s most recent tour. Each month should be distinct but play into a cohesive system.
Solution: The Start are an indie band from Los Angeles whose style blends styles of dark wave, art-rock and glam rock. To capture the essence of the band, referred to as “gutter hearts,” grunge textures and hand-written type was employed. The script type and layered, deconstructed treatment used for each month’s title reflects the old-fashioned Hollywood gloss and dark alternative style of their music and image. Grainy, soft-focus photography captures the intensity of the band’s live performances and fits their independent, rough-around-the-edges nature. (Photography: Amanda Chaffee)
