The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
Specs: 5.25x7.75in, perfect bound, full color.
Objective: To design a novel inside and out, with a cover that is an interpretive preview of the interior subject matter.
Solution: The Metamorphosis is a story that explores themes of disparity and isolation. The main character finds himself turned into a disgusting monster and rejected by his family to spend his days alone in a room that is dark and filthy. This filthy room, the central setting of the book, provided the concept for the cover. The manipulated wall, aged and covered with grime is overlaid with grungy textures to reflect the desolate, dirty, almost sickening mood of the story. The mucky yellows and browns also contribute to the overall feeling of filth. (Photography: Anonymous, www.sxc.hu stock)
